  1. Kinect

So the kinect ha been out for almost 6 weeks now and guess what? I’m not buying one. I don’t see the point in playing video games by waving my “hands in the air, like I just don’t care.” When I come home, I want to play video games to relax. If I wanted some exercise, I would go outside and go jogging.

Not thats not to say that I dont think the Kinect is cool. I’ve seen plenty of things done with that little piece of hardware that I could never imagine. There are modifications for just about everything. From:

  2. Cyborgs? Plz?

We’ve had brain-computer interfaces for years now, as well as mind-controlled prosthetic limbs. Now neuroscientists have taken it to the next level, with a system that would allow you to control a super-powered exoskeleton using only your thoughts.

It’s a science fiction dream, and now is close to reality. Scientists at the University of Chicago were experimenting with brain-computer interfaces in monkeys, teaching them to control computer cursors via electrodes implanted in their brains. We’ve known for a while that thinking about moving activates the same areas of the brain as moving itself does - so monkeys (and humans) learn to do this by imagining that they’re moving left, right, up or down. But the researchers discovered that the monkeys learned much faster if their arms were moved at the same time the cursor did - basically, they got feedback via movement in their bodies as well as from looking at the monitor.

  3. The giant inflatable roof of Minneapolis’ Metrodome stadium collapsed yesterday morning under the weight of heavy snowfall. Here’s some apocalyptic video taken inside the stadium as the roof tears open and snow cascades onto the turf. This is the problem with an inflatable roof. Place heavy thing on balloon. Balloon pops. Simple.

  4. I have never liked Snow White as much as I do now.

  5. What is Google TV?

Recently there has been a new broadcasting tech that has come into the spotlight called Google TV. But what exactly is Google TV? Google TV is a proprietery smart TV platform for set-top boxes and HDTVs based on the Android operating system, using IPTV(TV over IP which I believe Ryan had his oral presentation on), and was co-developed by Google, Intel, Sony and Logitech. This technology would allow you to seach for any TV show on your cable/satillite service provider, internet or whatever.

  6. The Powers of Ten

On this day, we celebrate both the immense size of our universe an the tinyest of atoms. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell.

It is videos like this that make me think about the complexities of life and intricacies of the world we live in.

  7. Level up and “Earn achievements” for skiing!

This fall 5 of the most popular ski resorts in California and Colorado will be “taking it to another level” by introducing the EpicMix ski pass. This ski pass has an RF-enabled chip inside it, that not only gives its user access to all 5 ski hills, but by swiping your card at the ski lifts you can follow your days skied, track your vertical feet, see where you rode, earn EpicMix “pins” for your achievements, and collect points (for what use, the website does not say). In addition to the RF passes, they will also be launching an iPhone and Android app to track these stats.

These passes are even reasonably priced. An unlimited EpicMix pass will put you back $620 and a $420 for a child pass. Interestingly enough, the Full season pass without the RF chip for an adult costs $1,950.

  8. Stairway to Heaven! A climb to 1700 feet!

As a Broadcast Engineering student, the field that I am going into opens many doors to jobs that I had not considered in high school. One of those job is the repair and maintenance of cellphone /television /radio transmission towers. One of the special skills needed to do this type of work is the absence of a fear of heights. Don’t believe me? Watch and tremble!
